SCFHA:
Join us!
The South Central Friesian Horse Assocation, SCFHA,
is a new, not for profit FHANA chapter for the southern states of TX, OK, NM, MS, LA, KS,
AZ, and AR but we welcome all who love Friesians also from outside
these states. Read all about our many activities on our
website, which I
created. All Friesian horse lovers are welcome. We send out quarterly newsletter
(for general info/ads and pictures) and distribute lots of newsy e-mails with
Friesian news from both North America and The Netherlands. If you would like to be on our mailing list please contact me at
anneke@annekesfriesians.com or
frisian@earthlink.net. As the chapter's contact person I
take care of the communications, publications,
and website and am part of the general management. At
this time membership is free of charge although we do as for a $15
donation to help us get started. We have received a warm welcome
and work together with the CFHC and the GLFHA chapters. As a FHANA
chapter we promote the purebred Dutch Friesian horse by the FPS/FHANA
regulations, inform the public, share information, and pull resources to
create a professional presence in the southern states, give southern
Friesian owners a voice, support our studbook, and have fun together. To be continued!

Friesian Questions
Do you have a question about
the Friesian horse? I have been involved with the Friesians since
1981 and am well connected in the Friesian world. I
also speak the various languages involved for easy communication. Feel free to ask me for information at
anneke@annekesfriesians.com or
frisian@earthlink.net.

Trail Riding
Cooper Lake State Parks, 11 miles of horse trails and much more just
northwest of Sulphur Springs TX. We also
have trails on the property, which is where I mostly ride. There
don't seem to be as many place to go as in Illinois but there is
enough and most definitely plenty of events and horse owners to
connect with.

Tack Stores
Tractor Supply is a big chain down south like
Farm & Fleet is up north with your daily horse supplies and so far the
only one with Shapley's MTG, although I find them to be somewhat more expensive. The
Farmers' Coop in Sulphur Springs or the local Tricounty feed store seem
to frequently have better prices. I have seen several tack stores around
but with mostly western gear. I tend to buy the majority of my supplies
online (State Line Tack,
Dover Saddlery,
Dressage Extensions,
Libertyville Saddle
Shop) and sometimes in The Netherlands.

Local
Magazines
A great free, bimonthly publication is Texas Hoofbeat. You can submit information about your horses and clubs to
the magazine for possible exposure, which is free of charge. Only
advertisements need to be paid for. Check out
www.texashoofbeat.com for
information, due dates, and ad fees or
look for your free copy in a tack or feed store near
you.
Another good resource is a free, monthly
publication called Lone Star Horse Report with lots of horse info,
event calendar, and ads for services/horses/products for sale. P.O.
Box 470215, Fort Worth TX 76147 or 316 Bailey Ave., Ste. 105, Forth
Worth TX 76107. I did not find a web or e-mail address.

General Area Information
We live in Franklin County, about a mile from the
border with Hopkins County. Hopkins county actively promotes itself to the
national equine communities. Visit the
Hopkins County
Chamber of Commerce equine page for interesting details. Year-round
training weather (be it a little on the hot side in the summer) is the
biggest plus along with many other nice features such as the landscape,
a wide variety of events and disciplines, location, good hay, longer
daylight hours (compared to Chicagoland) and more.
Real estate and land is indeed much more affordable, however, be aware
that everything else is just as expensive and the job market not as
bountiful or of the quality as in some other areas of the country so be sure you research the local job
market and finances first. People are in general horse people down here
and I give it a thumbs up. The biggest plus here: you can leave your
horses outside most of the year, which saves a lot of time and money
on cleaning stalls. For more East Texas horse resources visit
East Texas Horses.
