About Remco
Warner
van den IJssel
Remco's full name is Remco Warner van den IJssel
(Remco for short) named after our little nephew Warner Remco van den IJssel,
but of course the names had to start with P, R or S in 2005, and so
we switched the double first name. Foals we breed will carry our last name as registered with FHANA. Remco was born on Saturday April 9, 2005 and
we were lucky
enough to catch the birth on video tape. He is a Jorrit 363 and the
first foal out of my Sanne B. (S. Anne 340
sport),
3.51% inbreeding coefficient, stam 111. We had several stallions in
mind of which Jorrit was our back-up choice and we were, of course, rather disappointed when exactly Jorrit was
disapproved late 2004, even with having produced quite a few excellent premies in the U.S, however,
the disapproval was justified and we are very pleased nontheless with the elegance of
Remco. We had hoped it would be a filly but Remco is
handsome, all black, healthy, and powerful, and these days we are convinced
a boy is just as valuable as a girl. Remco was rated
highest of his colt class with eight participants at the Waxahachie
TX FHANA keuring on September 22. He had the highest 2nd premie and took
the Champion Colt title! He was praised for his attitude, good
conformation ("beautiful neck, good top line, bit long in the back"),
good muscling ("well developed, could have a bit longer gaskin
muscle"), and gait ("he acted like a stallion and didn't show all he
seems to be capable of"). He was sticking to his
mom but we can save that for a later age. See his ribbons below under
Pictures.

Future Plans
Remco was a rambunctious foal but has
become a good, yet at times still mischievious gelding. He
is doing well under saddle and has attended various events
for exposure such as a couple of in-hand clinics, the Expo
both under saddle and in hand, and local rides. Remco will be presented as an
adult in 2009 at four. He will become a lesson horse. His lifetime
registration with USEF was complete in November 2005. We had no intention
of cutting Remco but unfortunately with an eye on the future we had to
have him cut on faithful March 14, 2007. It worked out well with
our horses now being out together. There will be a stallion some day.

Pictures
We will regularly post new pictures on
this page so you can see Remco grow and in different
situations. The background pictures
were taken on April 23, 2005 at two weeks old. The patch on his
neck is from a plasma i.v. that was given as a preventative booster.

May
11, 2008: the easy life with mom and sis. |
October 7, 2007 at 2 1/2 years
old. After a lonely summer Remco was Weidebloem's weaning buddy and
he has since been out with Sanne and Weidbloem as a
little herd of three. |
June 23, 2007. A
teenager at 2 years and 2 1/2 months. Sleep-over at Wind
Spirit Friesians for the Jan Hendriks Friesian
educational clinic. His mane is all growth from just 4
months since the move and the cable that cut his mane.
Thank you, Marvel, for the pictures. |
March
28, 2007. 2 years minus 12 days old and recovered
from gelding. He's going through another growth spurt
and is turning into the sport type. |
1
year and 10 months old, February 25, 2007. 15.1
hands tall and still tubsy, but just wait until he hits
two. |
11
mos. old, March 11, 2006. Remco on the left, pasture
pal Sjouke on the right, portrait Remco. Pictures by
Christina Plantinga. New body shots a.s.a.p.! |
10
mos. old, February 12, 2006. Remco stands at or near
14 hands and weighs roughly 760 lbs. |
9
mos. old, January 9, 2006. Time for the monthly
deworming and temperature so we might as well take a
picture too. |
7
months old, November 14, 2005.
7 months old, November
14, 2005. Remco wearing the halter, in single shots,
right of Sjouke with feedbin and behind Sjouke at play.
This first-upgrade halter he started wearing about 4
months ago is almost too small now! |
6
mos. old, October 5, 2005. Last
breakfast together. Weaning time!
Remco has a new
pasture buddy in Sjouke fan Pleasant Hill and Sanne is
out on her own. I can ride again! Weaning was tough but
all things considered it went well. Remco fell and
slipped under the fence the first day, prancing around
with the other horses briefly but all is well that ends
well. |
5 1/2 mos., 24 wks old, September 24,
2005, 9 a.m. Chasing the
rooster and working off some energy as they're mostly
stallbound for this Rita hurricane weekend. The winds
and rain rolled in with force after these pictures but
everything was fine the next day. |
|
5 1/2
mos. old, September 22, 2005. Remco
received the highest 2nd premie rating, leading his
class of eight colts and with that taking the FHANA
Champion Colt 2005 title for the Texas keuring receiving
good comments on his conformation ("beautiful neck, good
top line, bit
long in the back"), muscle tone ("well developed,
could have a bit longer gaskin muscle"), gait
("he acted like a stallion and didn't show all he seems
capable of"), and
stallion-like personality! He'll be a handful but we
have a good understanding. |
21
1/2 wks./ 5 months old, September 8, 2005. He
contracted an upper respiratory infection on 9/2 but
with swift care he was back to normal in just a few
days.
He shows
a great stallion attitude and movement in a keuring setting
(didn't catch it on camera!). Now let's hope he does it
on 9/22. |
Remco
loves water bubbles and the flow of water on his gums
and will not leave the hose alone. |
20
wks./ 4 1/2 mos. old, August 27, 2005. Remco has
started to wear
the halter Sanne crossed the Atlantic with back in 1997. |
August
28, 2005. Excited about breakfast. He "talks" a lot. |
12
weeks old, July 4, 2005. |
|
Pictures taken at
Castle
Douglas, Rockwall TX. |
11
weeks old, June 26, 2005. |
Growing taller by the day, |
and
doing well in halter training. Love his personality. He
is smart. But also nippy. A stallion alright. But it's
getting better. |
10
weeks old, June 18, 2005. |
Remco's
first farrier appointment. He did very well! The farrier
is Chad Nichols. |
In 2
months he grew from fitting under his mom's belly to
this! |
2
months old, June 10, 2005. |
I'll get
up for the camera. |
"I
have started to rest on three legs but still love my naps
laying down." |
A lazy
noon hour in the life of... |
"I had a
body clip (it's hot out) and was a good boy: the Clipper Pro! |
My tree
house. Mom might look hungry but she gets plenty." |
7
weeks old, May 29, 2005. Finally, a trot! Remco
usually canters or walks. |
|
"I eat
some solid foods and drink some water now. I love
alfalfa." Remco is my little buddy but since he
only knows me I noticed he needs more exposure. To be
continued! |
|
6 weeks
old,
May 22, 2005. "So you want me to pose while you hold the
lead rope and the camera? |
Guess if
mom's o.k. with it (too busy eating) I'll do it. |
4
weeks old, May 8, 2005. Remco is starting to lead and loves to be
brushed and massaged. He's a smart cookie. "Look at my
feathers." |
Bald
spots from itching and the i.v. |
3
weeks old, April 30, 2005. |
"This
is
how tall I am now.
And my feathers have begun to grow!" |
2
weeks old, April 23, 2005. |
2 1/2
weeks.
"I'm teething and
nippy! And
mom is giving me foal diarrhea." |
1
week old, April 16, 2005. |

|
3
days old, April 12, 2005. |
1 day
old, April 10, 2005, pictures left.
2
days old, April 11, 2005, picture right. |
Sat.
night 04/09/05 about 11:15 p.m., 16 days before the
official due date. |
It's a
boy! It took him a while to get up and he's on the
small side but everything looks great. |
Jorrit 363
Remco is a Jorrit 363 x Anne 340 sport x Lammert 260
pref from his 7th and last approved breeding season in
2004. Unfortunately he is now available for B-book breedings. Jorrit 363 (Nykle 309 x Lammert 260
pref x Ygram 240) is owned
by and located at The Friesian
Connection in Dorr MI. He was disapproved on offspring
in the fall of 2004 and after a re-inspection in 2005 confirmed
disapproved on offspring in December 2005. Here are several pictures of Jorrit.
The ones from the 2005 Midwest Horse
Fair in Madison WI are by Angela Fritsch. Click on the thumbnail pictures below to
